What causes ED?

Other problems associated with ED.

Smoking and/or alcohol

Smoking and drinking too much alcohol can lead to ED. But these are factors you can control.

If you smoke, you should consider quitting. Smoking can cause cancer, emphysema, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and other illnesses. It also damages the blood vessels, which restricts or prevents blood flow to the penis, leading to ED.

For men with other risks that can cause ED, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, smoking doubles their chances of having ED.

If you drink alcohol, it's best to have no more than 2 drinks a day. Alcohol slows down your reactions, by affecting the central nervous system. This can make it more difficult for you to get an erection.
