Glossary of Terms


Here is a glossary of some anatomical and medical terms that will be important to your understanding of the prostrate and BPH.

A simple definition of the terms and some related facts are provided.

Prostrate
gland

The prostate is the gland of the male reproductive system. It secretes the seminal fluid, a milky substance that combines with sperm produced in the testicles to form semen.

Urethra

The tube leading from the bladder to the outside of the body, through which urine flows to be discharged. In males, the urethra travels through the penis, and also carries the semen.

Urinary tract infection

The urinary tract or system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. An infection occurs when microorganisms, usually bacteria, cling to the opening of the urethra and begin to multiply.

Hyperplasia

A condition in which there is an increase in the number of normal cells in a tissue or organ.

Prostatitis

Inflammation of the prostate gland.

Nocturia

Excessive urinating at night.

Incontinence

The unintentional loss of urine. It is the sudden strong urge to urinate that is hard to delay.

Intermittent
urine

It is the ‘on’ and ‘off’ flow of urine, stopping and starting at intervals.

Dribbling after urination

It refers to the trickle or drops of urine even after the main volume has expired.
